Star on the nest

Sleepy Star

Hello, this is Jana, and I’m here with one of our Small Stories. We hope you will enjoy this one about a star, especially if you are feeling just a bit sleepy.

A family of stars lived in a nest in the sky.

One night, it was time for the little stars to leave the nest.

The big sister star stood on the edge.

She held her breath. She bent her knees. And she jumped.

“Bye-bye, Mummy! Bye-bye, Daddy!”

Up she flew, and she joined the bright stars of the Great Bear.

The middle sister star stood on the edge of the nest.

She closed her eyes. And she jumped.

“Bye-bye, Mummy! Bye-bye, Daddy!”

Up she flew, and joined the stars of the Hunter.

The little boy star stood on the edge.

His legs were wobbling.

He jumped.

He flapped his arms.

“Er… bye-bye, Mummy,” he said.

He went up just a bit.

“Bye-bye, Daddy,” he said.

And then he went down.

And further down.

And even more down.

Down, down, down he fell until –

Plop!

He landed in a flower bed.

Poor little star!

He was stuck in the earth.

His shine did not shine.

He felt cold.

He looked up and saw his star sisters so, so far away.

An owl flew up above. His big eyes did not see the star.

A beetle tip-toed across the soil. His feet tickled the star, but he did not realise.

In the morning, a dog came into the garden.

He sniffed the flowers. And found something interesting.

He licked it clean and picked it up in his mouth He carried it into the house, and into the kitchen.

Plop!

He dropped the stone at Raffy’s feet

Mum said, “Bongo, what’s this dirty thing?”

Raffy stared at it.

“It’s a star.”

“It’s just a stone,” said Mum. “It belongs back in the garden.”

“No,” said Raffy. “It’s magic. I want to keep it.”

“All right,” said Mum with a sigh. “I’ll wash it under the tap.”

At bedtime, Raffy went to look for his magic star.

It was gone.

“Oh, that thing?” said Mum. “I didn’t know it mattered. I thought it was just a pebble.”

“But he’s my magic star,” said Raffy. “I can’t go to sleep without him.”

“I’m sorry,” said Mum. “I put him back in the garden. It’s bedtime now.”

Raffy lay in bed. He was not happy.

Bongo padded in.

He had something in his mouth.

He dropped it beside the bed.

“Bongo! You found my star!”

Raffy picked up his star.

“His eyes are closed,” he said. “I’ll call him Sleepy Star.”

Dad looked round the door.

“Good night, Raffy.”

He turned off the light.

It was dark.

Raffy whispered: Twinkle,  twinkle,

Sleepy Star.

Near my pillow,

there you are. Glow a little Soft and slow
